With the rise of social media, it has been a platform that is used widely for business and personal purposes. Social media sites and apps like Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, WhatsApp, Viber, etc have been a platform for everyone to showcase their talents or simply express themselves. Likewise, businesses use these platforms to widely advertise their businesses nowadays. However, not everyone uses these platforms with much responsibility. Also, we do not always keep in mind what we share on these social media sites and how that can make us vulnerable. Hence, Code for Change, which is an initiative for Youth In Social Change, held a Social Media Security Seminar at United College on 19th February 2020.

Youth In Social Change was an organization that was founded by Niranjan Chhetri in 2017. Later on, the “Code for Change” was also founded in the same year which consisted of a union of IT students. Their focus was to establish learning among the students and their peers and the practical application of the latest technology they are constantly exposed to. The Social Media Security Seminar was meant to drive the purpose of “A Movement toward the proper use of Social Media”. Sponsored by Grace International, it was also supported by eSewa, Nabil Investment Banking Limited and edusanjal.com.

United College was its 4th destination in all of its Social Media Security Campaign as it took to over 4 major cities in Nepal. This Seminar held at United College was led by Team ByteElite which consisted of Trainer Bishal Bhandari and Trainer Santosh Jaiswal from Code for Change. It was an interesting event that had our students participating as the team leaders conducted various questionnaires regarding how many times they used Social Media sites and apps daily. Or the amount of time they invested in all of the social media sites and apps they usually use. In regards to using it, they were also asked if they knew what type of information they were sharing and with who they were sharing it. It was to bring on the awareness that all of us have to be responsible and aware of the things we share on Social Media. Also, we do not misuse the platforms for other purposes.

Thus, we would like to wholesomely thank Code for Change and Youth in Social Change for bringing this wonderful seminar to United College. Congratulations on the grand success of the whole Social Media Security Campaign that was able to extend its reach across more than the major 4 cities in Nepal.
